August 24, 1993

The District Officer just left, he was here for two and a half hours. He told me the entire history of Ayutthaya, twice! His assistant was very nice and I have an idea who gets the work done there. The assistants nick-name was “Joo”, I think it means “small”. He was born in Japan, but he is Thai. The District Officer was in the United States in 1962, and he speaks really good English. He said next time we talk, we will speak Thai!

Kuhn May made a wonderful dinner tonight. Fried Mackeral ( Plaa Saba Todd) and sauteed vegetables and meat, all with really great sauce. When we finished I started to do the dishes and Kuhn Pa stopped me, didn’t want me to do them. When I asked why, he said there were snakes out there! I told him I wasn’t afraid and he let me do the dishes.
