July 1993

After more than a year of preparation, I am finally in Bangkok.  Of the things that were the toughest on me; first was packing, it was all so vague. Second was what would happen to my little dog, Tiffy. What would happen to my car, all my stuff.  Everyone took such good care of me; it was great. Mom took the car; Tera took care of Tiffy (I will never be able to tell her how grateful I am). That part hurts a lot. I love that little dog so much and I don’t think I will get to see her again, she won’t survive two more years.  All the other stuff I left, Geoff got shipped off to the appropriate storage (Tera’s or Mom’s!) The guy I was dating let me down emotionally, not too easy, but enough so I would believe it and feel foolish, which I did. I will miss the things I did regularly, Cowboy Dancing and hanging out with Sherree and Suzanne, all that fun stuff.

Thailand is so cool, pretty much what I expected so far. The people are as nice as I have always heard – the land of smiles is definitely true. There are 6 forestry volunteers, they call us trees, and 6 Fisheries volunteers (fish), the rest are English Teachers, and I think there is about 30 volunteers (Teaching English as a Second Language. What’s really great is that they are not used to westerners, even in Bangkok, USA is a long way away. People stare at us and if you smile they smile really big and turn shy.
